A humpback whale breaching — the season's signature sight

Banderas Bay

Humpback whale season

Every winter, humpback whales migrate to the warm water of Banderas Bay to mate and give birth. Watching a mother and calf — or a full breach — is the trip most winter visitors remember.

What happens

  • The official season is set each year by SEMARNAT, Mexico's environment agency; last season ran December 8 to March 23. The 2026–27 dates are announced before the season opens.
  • Peak sightings are in January and February, when calves are most active.
  • Licensed operators follow federal rules on distance and time near the whales; official protections apply only during the designated season.
  • Whales are sometimes seen as early as November or as late as April.

Local tips

  • Go out in the morning when the bay is usually calmer — easier for spotting and for seasickness.
  • Small boats get closer to eye level; bigger catamarans are steadier and more comfortable for kids.
  • Book early in your trip, so a windy day can be rescheduled.
  • Only book licensed operators — ask, and don't board a boat that chases or crowds the whales.
