Dec 16–25
What happens
- December 16–24: the posadas — nightly gatherings that re-enact Mary and Joseph's search for shelter, with candles, songs, piñatas and ponche.
- Nativity scenes (nacimientos) go up on December 16; the baby Jesus is placed on the night of the 24th.
- December 24, Nochebuena, is the main celebration: a late family dinner, and many restaurants serve set holiday menus.
- December 25 is slow and quiet — the morning streets and beaches are at their emptiest of the season.

Local tips
- Book your Nochebuena dinner weeks ahead, and ask whether it's a set menu and what time seating starts.
- Use Christmas morning for a beach walk or an early boat trip — the town is still asleep.
- If you're invited to a posada, bring something sweet or a drink — and expect to sing.

FAQ
Common questions
Are restaurants open on Christmas Day in Puerto Vallarta?
Many are, but the big night in Mexico is Christmas Eve (Nochebuena, December 24), when lots of restaurants serve set holiday menus and book up early. December 25 is a quiet, relaxed day; some places close or open late, so check hours before you go.
