A monumental altar with skeleton musicians

Day of the Dead

Día de Muertos

Puerto Vallarta's biggest cultural moment of the fall. The core days are November 1 and 2; in the days before, monumental catrinas line the Malecón and the city runs a program of altars, music and a catrina parade.

What happens

  • Monumental catrinas — elegant skeleton figures made by local hotels and artists — line the Malecón, turning the boardwalk into an open-air gallery.
  • Puerto Vallarta holds the Guinness record for the world's tallest catrina, unveiled on the Malecón.
  • The Parade of Catrinas starts at the 5 de Diciembre cemetery and winds through town, with costumes and face paint.
  • Families build ofrendas (altars) with marigolds, candles, photos and pan de muerto, and visit cemeteries on November 2.
  • This year Puerto Vallarta is part of Jalisco's Festival de las Almas program, with around 28 activities along the coast.

Local tips

  • Walk the Malecón catrinas at sunset — cooler, and the lighting is best for photos.
  • Cemetery visits are family time: be respectful, ask before photographing people or altars.
  • Try pan de muerto from a local bakery — it's only around for these few weeks.
