Zona Romántica
The densest tourist zone, with the highest concentration of restaurants and bars in the city and the Basilio Badillo restaurant row. It's LGBTQ+ friendly, walkable, and sits on Playa Los Muertos.
Good for: first-timers, couples, nightlife, anyone who wants to walk everywhere. Trade-off: lively and can be loud.
Zona Romántica guide→Centro
The historic downtown: the Malecón boardwalk, the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and a mix of tourist and local businesses.
Good for: first-timers who want the classic Vallarta, sunsets on the Malecón, being central. Trade-off: busy, especially on weekends.
Centro guide→5 de Diciembre
A residential neighborhood climbing the hill north of Centro, walkable to the Malecón and quieter than the Zona Romántica — with long-time local families alongside newer apartments, cafés and guesthouses.
Good for: longer stays and repeat visitors who want a neighborhood. Trade-off: steep streets in places.
Versalles
Inland from the Hotel Zone, Versalles has become the city's food corridor, popular with locals and food lovers.
Good for: eating well, a local feel, longer stays. Trade-off: not on the beach.
Marina Vallarta and the Hotel Zone
Marina Vallarta is the upscale marina district — yacht clubs, golf and resort hotels, near the airport. The Hotel Zone is the strip of large resort hotels between the marina and Centro, with beach access and all-inclusive options.
Good for: families, resort stays, cruise passengers. Trade-off: you'll take taxis to the old town.

Hillside neighborhoods south of the Zona Romántica: ocean-view condos, villas and boutique hotels, quiet and residential.
Good for: views, peace and quiet, couples. Trade-off: steep hills — not easy on foot, especially at night.

- Resort and pool days with kids: Marina Vallarta or the Hotel Zone — or Nuevo Vallarta across the river.
