Where to stay: Zona Romantica, Marina, or 5 de Diciembre

Three very different neighbourhoods, three different trips. A quick honest read on who each one is for.

Where to stay: Zona Romantica, Marina, or 5 de Diciembre

Puerto Vallarta is small, but where you sleep changes the whole feel of the trip.

Zona Romantica (Old Town / South Side)

Cobblestones, Playa Los Muertos, the densest run of restaurants and bars in the city, and the heart of the LGBTQ+ scene. Walkable to almost everything downtown. Trade-off: it is lively and can be loud, and the "beach" here is a people-watching beach, not a quiet one.

Good for: first-timers, couples, anyone who wants to walk out the door into the action.

Marina Vallarta

A planned resort district near the airport — a yacht-lined boardwalk, big hotels, a golf course, calm water. Everything is a short drive rather than a walk. Quieter, more polished, less character.

Good for: families, golfers, cruise passengers, a resort-style stay.

5 de Diciembre

The colonia just north of the Malecón, up the hillside. Locals live here. Cheaper rentals, great taco stands, killer sunset views from the higher streets, a 10-minute walk to downtown. Less polished, some steep hills.

Good for: repeat visitors, longer stays, anyone who wants a neighbourhood rather than a resort.

If it is your first trip and you are only here a few days, Zona Romantica. If you want calm and space, Marina. If you want to feel like you live here, 5 de Diciembre.
