Puerto Vallarta's airport (PVR) sits inside the city, about 1 km north of Marina Vallarta, and handled roughly 6.9 million passengers in 2025. Getting out of it is easy once you know the layout — the only tricky part is the first two minutes after customs.
Step 1: Walk through the "shark tank"
After immigration, baggage claim and customs, you pass through a corridor lined with official-looking desks. The people there offer "free" taxis, tours, maps and welcome drinks. Many are selling timeshare presentations — the free ride or discount is the hook.
Locals call it the shark tank. The fix is simple: don't stop, smile, say "no, gracias", and keep walking until you're through the doors into the public arrivals hall. Nobody official needs anything from you in that corridor.
Step 2: Choose how you'll get to town
Official airport taxi (easiest)
The authorized taxi booths are in the public arrivals hall, by the exit doors. Prices are fixed by zone — you tell them your destination, pay at the booth and get a ticket for the driver. No haggling, no meter.
One 2026 guide reports roughly US$25–35 to Centro or the Romantic Zone and US$20–25 to the Hotel Zone. Prices change, so confirm the amount for your zone before you pay.
Uber or DiDi (cheaper, a short walk)
App rides are cheaper than airport taxis. Airport pickups were disputed between taxi unions and the apps for years. In October 2025 a federal judge granted Uber a definitive suspension allowing pickups and drop-offs at Puerto Vallarta airport, and Jalisco's governor said the National Guard would respect it. Drivers may only be at the airport with an active trip.
In practice, many travelers still walk out of the terminal, cross the pedestrian bridge over the highway and request their ride from the street side. When you land, open the app first and follow the pickup point it shows; if it puts you at the curb, great.
Local bus (cheapest)
City buses stop on the same street side, a short walk from the bridge. Look for Centro or Zona Hotelera on the windshield. Fares are a handful of pesos, but buses are crowded and there's no space for big suitcases. Fine with a backpack, not with a family's luggage.
Pre-booked transfer (most relaxed)
A driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name on a sign, at a price you agreed before you flew. It costs more than an app ride, but it's the least hassle with kids, lots of bags, or a late arrival.

The pricing game only runs in arrivals. For your departure, any street taxi or app ride can drop you at the terminal without trouble.
Three small tips
- Carry small bills. Drivers often can't break a 500-peso note.
- Agree the price first if you flag a street taxi — before the bags go in the trunk.
- Have your address written down (and the colonia name). It saves a lot of pointing at maps.
