Puerto Vallarta's airport (PVR) is 15 minutes north of the Malecón. Here is how people actually get in.
Skip the airport taxi desk
Inside the terminal, uniformed transportistas sell rides at a fixed, high rate — often MX $600–900 to the Romantic Zone for what should cost a fraction of that. They are not a scam, just the most expensive option, and they are very good at steering you.
The cheaper options
- Uber / DiDi — not allowed to pick up on airport property. Walk out, cross the pedestrian bridge to the highway (5 minutes), and request from there. Expect MX $150–250 to downtown.
- Pre-booked transfer — a fixed price you arrange online before you fly. Around US $25–35 for a private van, driver waiting with a sign. Worth it with luggage or kids.
- Local bus — the "Centro" or "Olas Altas" bus stops on the highway by that same bridge. MX $15, 30–40 minutes, no big-luggage space. Fine for a backpack.
One tip
Have small bills. Drivers rarely have change for a MX $500 note, and "no tengo cambio" is how a MX $200 ride becomes a MX $500 one.
Coming back to the airport, any street taxi or Uber is cheap and easy — the pricing game only runs in the arrivals hall.
