What "rainy season" actually means
From roughly mid-June to mid-October, most days look like this: hot, humid, bright mornings; clouds building through the afternoon; a heavy thunderstorm in the late afternoon or overnight that clears by breakfast. It is not days of grey drizzle. The rain is dramatic and short.
The upside
- The hills turn green. Waterfalls run. The jungle tours are at their best.
- Fewer people. Restaurants take walk-ins, beaches have space.
- Lower prices. Hotels and tours are 20–40% cheaper than in February.
- Warm sea. The water hits bath temperature.
The downside
- Humidity. It is genuinely muggy. Plan indoor time in the early afternoon.
- The odd washout. Once or twice a season a storm settles in for a full day.
- September is the wettest month and the tail of hurricane season — direct hits are rare but the swell and rain can disrupt boat tours.
