The Marietas Islands (Islas Marietas) are a protected national park off the coast of Punta de Mita. Its most famous feature is Playa del Amor (the "Hidden Beach") — a sunlit sandy cavern inside a crater, accessible only by swimming through a marine tunnel at low tide.
Because it is an ecologically sensitive national park (CONANP), visiting requires understanding the strict access rules.
The Permit Rule (Why Tours Sell Out Weeks Early)
The Mexican federal government strictly limits access to the Hidden Beach:
- Only 116 people per day are legally permitted inside Playa del Amor.
- Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for conservation.
- Time limit: You get exactly 15–20 minutes inside the beach crater to allow the next group in.
- Age restriction: Children under 10 and adults over 65 are generally restricted by park regulations from swimming the tidal tunnel.
If you book a generic "Marietas Eco Tour", it does NOT include entry to the Hidden Beach crater. It only circles the islands for snorkeling, blue-footed boobies, and paddleboarding.
Two Ways to Visit
1. The Hidden Beach Permit Tour: Specifically includes the CONANP bracelet and guided swim through the arch into the crater with a helmet and life vest. 2. What to Bring & Practical Tips
- Biodegradable sunscreen only (regular chemical sunscreens are strictly confiscated by park rangers).
- GoPro or waterproof phone case on a floating wrist strap — you must swim ~60 meters through the tidal tunnel, so loose cameras will sink to the ocean floor.
- Motion sickness pill: Take Dramamine 45 minutes before departure; the morning swell at the outer islands can roll.
